Introduction:Not all holiday songs you hear are traditional, classic, or religious. Sometimes holiday songs that you hear on the radio & in the stores are pop songs. Here are the top five Christmas pop songs.
"All I Want for Christmas is You" is Christmas pop song performed by the incredibly musically talented Mariah Carey. It is a song about not wanting material presents, but instead wanting a love all your own. "All I Want for Christmas is You" was written by Mariah Carey & Walter Afanasie & was released on Mariah Carey's album "Merry Christmas." It is one of the best Christmas pop songs because it is catchy, fun to sing, has a sweet message, & is overall a very well crafted Christmas song & pop song.
"Jingle Bell Rock" is a popular Christmas song that was first released by Bobby Helms in 1957. Since then, the upbeat holiday song has been recorded by many, many, many other artists, including Bill Haley & his Comets, Brenda Lee, Billy Gilman, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Arcade Fire, Amy Grant, & Jessica Simpson (to name a few.) I think the reason so many people want to record it is because "Jingle Bell Rock" is like the perfect, wholesome Christmas party song! It's fun, catchy, easy to learn (as it has few lyrics really), & it's just infectiously poppy; & incredibly Christmasy. "That's the Jingle Bell, that's the Jingle Bell, that's the Jingle Bell Rock!"
"Santa Baby" is a 1953 Christmas pop song written by Joan Javits & Philip Springer. It was originally recorded by Eartha Kitt (with Henri René & his orchestra) but like "Jingle Bell Rock," "Santa Baby" has been recorded many other times since. Some others who have recorded "Santa Baby" include Madonna, Shakira, Britney Spears, & The Pussycat Dolls. It has even been done on television shows (Calista Flockhart sang it for "Ally McBeal") & by a pig; Miss Piggy to be exact. "Santa Baby" is a tongue-in-cheek look at a Christmas list sung by a woman who wants extravagant gifts such as sables, yachts, & a ring (& "I don't mean on the phone.") It's a lot of fun & a great Christmas pop song.
"Last Christmas" is a song by British pop duo Wham! It was originally released by Epic Records in 1984 (the year I was born!) & was written by George Michael (one half of Wham!) It is a Christmas pop song about giving your heart away & having it not cared for. "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, but the very next day, you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special." -"Last Christmas" "Last Christmas" has been remade a few times, by Ashley Tisdale, Taylor Swift, & the cast of "Glee" to name a few. It is a beautifully crafted Christmas pop song.
"Where are you Christmas" is a Christmas pop song that stems from "Christmas, Why Can't I Find You?" a song co-written by James Horner & Will Jennings for the movie "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" in the year 2000. It became the longer pop version recorded by Faith Hill when Mariah Carey added to the lyrics & musical content with James Horner & Will Jennings. "Where are You Christmas" is a beautiful Christmas pop song about finding the joy of Christmas in tough times & always & letting Christmas fill your heart with love.
Other great Christmas pop songs include "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" (N*SYNC), "My Only Wish this Year" (Britney Spears), "A Wonderful Christmastime" (Paul McCartney), "My Grown-up Christmas List," (Amy Grant) "Blue Christmas" (Elvis Presley) & "Feliz Navidad (José Feliciano)."
