Although my father, a career Army officer, was not killed in battle, as a military brat, Memorial Day still has special significance to me. These are the top five things I recommend doing in Nashville for Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a perfect excuse for a cook out. Typically, Memorial Day takes place right before the weather really heats up in Nashville, so it is usually a great day or evening to fire up the barbecue and grill out. It's a nice touch to invite any of your relatives who served in the Armed Forces.
Many city cemeteries offer special Memorial Day ceremonies for the deceased who have fallen in war, so Memorial Day is a good day to visit the local cemetery to put a flag on the grave of a military loved one.
Not only does Ft. Campbell offer the Pratt Military Museum, home of various war relics and aircraft from battles from WWI through recent days, but it is also home to the annual 101st Airborne Memorial Day Weekend Cookout.
Gaylord Opryland always hosts something special for Memorial Day, and traditionally, it is their Southern Gospel Festival which typically runs two nights and three days at the resort hotel over the holiday weekend. (See Supporting Links below for more info)
While the Tennessee Renaissance Festival may not sound like traditional Memorial Day fare, the Royal Jousting Tournament Weekend takes place over Memorial Day weekend... and armored knights were part of many historic battles of yore! (See Supporting Links below for more info)
I have done all of the above at one time or another in Nashville for Memorial Day. If any of your relatives are vets, don't forget them on Memorial Day.
