The Biggest Loser is an awesome show. Don't get me wrong here. It would be awesome to win all that money, too. But would it be worth it?
Especially if you are overweight or even obese, you should really check out these reasons to never be a contestant on The Biggest Loser.
IF these reasons are not good enough to convince you, then you go right ahead and apply to be on their next show.
Look at all of the contestants that are and have been on The Biggest Loser. They all exercise way too much. They literally spend hours every single day in the gym.
They lift weights, each other, drag each other around, carry their own weight, etc. They are pushed to do things that are way too hard for even healthy, normal weight people to be able to do.
Seriously now, did you ever hear how many calories that they are allowed to eat each day? It is nowhere near the amount of calories that they should be eating for their weights.
They rarely even get to have any sweets or desserts. It's not like you can't have sweets or desserts and still lose weight.
If you weigh about 150 pounds, you should only be losing about 1.5 pounds in any given week. That would be an acceptable weight loss rate.
How often do you see these contestants losing pounds in the double digits in a single week? It's not like they weigh 1,000 pounds. If they weighed 1,000 pounds, then it would be acceptable to lose 10 pounds a week.
These contestants on The Biggest Loser are all losing their weight way too fast. There is no reason for that.
We can all lose weight right in our own homes. Surely, there won't be any monetary prize for losing weight on your own, but at least you can lose your weight at an acceptable pace, and without killing yourself to get down to your desired weight.
You can even have a special treat now and then. It really won't hurt you. All you need is to change your lifestyle, not give up your life.
You really do not need to exercise daily for hours on end to lose weight. You don't need to be lifting your own weight, eating like a bird, and losing weight so quickly by depriving yourself of the foods that you love and enjoy.
Always consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine, but stay home. Relax, and enjoy the experience of losing weight on your own, and at your own pace.
Of course, you can't win if you don't play, though...
wow! great list and a ton of H5's and I've added another! besides...if I lost 200 lbs...there wouldn't be much left!
Thanks for the info on this show. I've only watched it one time. H5
high five!!
Good list. And congrats on your personal weight loss!
LOL Me neither! I would be crying like crazy and just want to go home.
Nice list of reasons not to be a contestant on the Biggest Loser. I know that I wouldn't last one day there with them screaming at me.
I agree we can do it from home - however, some people need more encouraging than others.
As for some of us - unfortunately, its in our genes. My whole dads side of the family is huge. And I have been tested for things like my metabolism, my thyroid and a multitude of other things - trying to find out why I am unable to loose some weight. Congrats on loosing weight on your own! Thats always a plus. I just purchased the EA Sports Active 2 for PS3, and so far, so good.
Its a good article, even tho I have to disagree a bit.
As for them working out a lot - exercise releases endorphines, and gets folks high essentially. Some people love the feeling they get after working out, so they work out more. As long as they are a healthy weight, and they are ok with working out so hard, I have no problem with it, and see nothing wrong with it.
And for the lady who says "dont become overweight in the first place", shame on you. Some people cannot help it - whether its genes, or whatever the fact
And for those of us who did "become overweight in the first place," I thought you offered some great advice. I usually don't watch the Biggest Loser because it seems unrealistic. Thanks for confirming that with this great list!
My list would begin with "don't become overweight in the first place." :) Congrats on the front page.
Wow,what a super article! Lots of interaction, pros and cons to boot and great morsels of facts for us to chew on (without those calories of course!)You've done a great job and the proof is in the fact that you've made front page. Congratulations and thanks for allowing for a great debate! (Ha, absolutely no need to apologize as far as I can see. We all see things differently and that's what makes us all so unique!) A great big HIGH 5, my friend!
I only take issue with your 4th point. There is a widely accepted rate of weight loss of 1.5 - 2 pounds per week that is considered to be safe and effective. However, in the case of these contestants, there is a point where losing the weight faster is actually better than continuing to carry it. Considering that they are doctor-supervised in their weight loss, it is better that they lose the double digits each week. The real downside to this is for the viewers who get unrealistic expectations for their own weight loss and get frustrated when they don't achieve it.
Great list, though!
I think part of the Biggest Loser is getting the contestants away from their home to teach them what they should be doing to lose weight. Something that the couldn't do at home.
Do not feel bad Snowfence ~ A BIG part of writing a great article is inspiring thought & debate, which you did both... so congrats!! :)
I am terribly sorry if I have offended anyone by writing this list. However, I have lost 100 pounds on my own at home, and I know countless others who have also. If you only have a few pounds to lose or even if you are morbidly obese. YOU CAN DO THIS! Come on now, GET UP and GET MOVING! Please, do it for yourself!!! By the way, I love watching The Biggest Loser. It is my favorite show. :D
Horrible reasons.
If you want to be fat, don't work out, eat a lot of calories, eat fattening foods.
No, not everyone can lose weight by themselves. That is why they are so morbidly obese.
They have a LOT of fat, water to lose. Fat stores water, hence the huge weight loss numbers.
Their weight loss program is monitored... please don't encourage obese people to think IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT THEY ARE FAT, it IS THEIR FAULT.
Yes, and like we don't have enough stress in life? Good advice and congrats!
I completely agree that anyone can do it from home. :) Congrats on the home page!!
Congrats! It's a show like all the others. Contestants have to agree to the terms and they get paid even if they don't win. LOL!
I've never watched the show, but the producers are setting these contestants up for failure. It's impossible to change your habits overnight and stick to such a grueling diet and workout schedule.
Congrats on the front page!
Congratulations on the front page and welcome to LM5. You're off to a good start! :)
Enjoy your front page spotlight, Congrats!
Back to say congrats on the front page.
Congrats on the front page. Nice List.
Excellent Reasons. Excellent list of 5. Congratulations on front page.
Just returning to congratulate you on the front page spot!
I've often wondered how they can push themselves as they do and not wind up in the hospital. I have a feeling though that when the cameras aren't rolling things are not so stressful. Congrats on the front page!
Congrats on the front page! Way to go!
Back to say congrats on being featured! :)
I have watched the show occasionally and always worry that someone will have a heart attack from the hyper-stressful workout. They should start gradually and build up to that level of intensity!
I have a fairly positive self-image but have found I feel depressed and negative about myself after watching Biggest Loser or I Used to Be Fat. Both perpetuate the myth that thinness leads to happiness. Neither focus on what they should which is being healthy and happy. And healthy does not mean being a size two like TV would lead you to believe.
The contestants on Biggest Loser are almost guaranteed to gain the weight back and, in some physician's view, yo-yo dieting is worse than keeping the weight on.
I'd add public humiliation to the list of reasons. Can't say I've watched the show, but the commercials are enough to warn me off from viewing!
I couldn't do what they do on that show and I am in pretty good shape. I agree with you! They are doing it for the money but at the same time risking there life. Great Article! ping ya H5
Right reasons to never be a contestant on Biggest Loser. Not that I've ever considered it. ): HI5
This is just another way to make money exploiting obese people. I agree with this great list of reasons not to be a contestant on the Biggest Loser.
Losing so much weight in so short a time is not healthy for the human body. I believe a gradual weight loss is not only healthier, but will result in keeping it off longer as well. H5!
I fully agree with your reasons never to be a contestant on the biggest loser. Losing weight sensibily is not done on that show.
Apparently, many contestants on the show also gain their weight back after they leave. I think part of that is because their diet is so extreme that they can't keep it up once they get home. It's better to establish good habits and lose weight gradually like you said. Great list!
