Introduction: We all know that taking care of our teeth is important for good oral hygiene. Did you know that taking care of your toothbrush is important for keeping your teeth healthy too?
It's true that regular brushing is the best way to protect teeth, but only if your toothbrush is in good working order. Old, worn out toothbrushes do not remove plaque properly. Follow these tips for good toothbrush maintenance.
Rinse your toothbrush carefully after you brush your teeth. Hold the toothbrush under rapidly running water until the all the remaining toothpaste and debris is washed away. Tap the toothbrush against the sink to eliminate the remaining water droplets.
Place your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air-dry between brushing. To avoid bacteria growth, do not cover up damp toothbrush bristles. In the bathroom, store your toothbrush more than 6 feet from the toilet.
If you live with others, never share toothbrushes. Find ways to easily distinguish the toothbrushes; either select different colors or put an identifying mark on your toothbrush. If you keep multiple toothbrushes in the same holder, keep the bristle heads from resting together.
There are several ways you can disinfect a toothbrush. ADA-approved toothbrush sanitizers are available for purchase. Alternatively, some dentists suggest soaking your toothbrush in an antibacterial mouthwash for a few minutes after each use. Other dentists simply recommend replacing your toothbrush regularly.
Get a new toothbrush every three to four months (sooner if the bristles are worn and frayed). Replacing your toothbrush regularly is a big step in maintaining good oral hygiene. Additionally, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends switching to a new toothbrush every time you've been sick.
