A study shows that two to three hours after of acute consumption of a flavinol rich beverage (such as homemade hot chocolate), blood flow to the brain was increased.
Chocolate is a source of antioxidants. Antioxidants destroy free radicals. Free radicals are what destroy cell membranes and DNA. The darker the chocolate, the more antioxidants it contains.
The increased blood flow to the brain may enhance brain function. This may help people who have trouble remembering things, driving, or have sleep deprivation.
Chocolate has been found to reduce blood pressure. However, neither green tea or black tea does this. The fats in dark chocolate may even lower cholesterol levels.
The body cannot make flavinols itself when it is stressed. However, eating chocolate, especially dark chocolate, helps the body to get flavinols from food. This can help reduce stress.
With these findings, it is recommended that people eat a little bit of chocolate every day. Dr. Joe Vincent, Ph.D., a chemistry professor at the University of Pennsylvania Scranton does just that.
