In these days of tight prices, homemade Christmas Candy can be easy, inexpensive to make and a good Christmas gift. More and more of us are making handcrafted and homemade gifts these days...why not make it delicious candy?

Rocky Road Candy

Rocky Road Candy is one of the quickest, easiest ways I know of to make a great candy both kids and grownups will love. The combination of marshmallows, chocolate and nuts is irresistible. Also, it can be made long in advance, cut into squares and wrapped individually to be placed into Christmas gift baskets. No refrigeration needed, just room temperature. That way you can make it far ahead to have enough to share with everyone.

Chocolate Fudge

There are many recipes for chocolate fudge...and most people have a favorite recipe. Two that are outstanding are the old fashioned firm cocoa fudge Grandma used to make, and the soft recipe using marshmallow creme. There are many variations that can be made depending on the taste of the individual; Peppermint candy and flavoring, nuts of all kinds, chopped candy bars stirred in after fudge is cooked, etc. This is another candy that can be made in advance, wrapped individually and used as a gift. Fudge stores very well as long as it's well wrapped.

Buttermilk Fudge

Buttermilk fudge is not chocolate, but rather a velvety, caramel type of fudge, particularly appealing to those rare folks who are not chocolate fans. This fudge has outstanding qualities of staying moist when individually wrapped, so that it will be creamy and enjoyable when opened. Nuts may be added to this recipe, but are not necessary for purist caramel lovers.

Bourbon Balls or Rum Balls

Parties at Christmas would not be parties without Bourbon Balls or Rum Balls. Everyone enjoys the flavor and that feeling of doing something a little "naughty" in eating the alcohol involved in their making. These are good as gifts only when packaged in an airtight container, as they lose their strength and tend to dry out the longer they are exposed to air.

Peanut Brittle

Peanut Brittle is light, crunchy and peanutty-good. The recipe is a little more labor intensive, but the results are certainly worth it. This also makes a great Christmas gift, and you don't have to worry about it drying out...quite the contrary, it needs to be kept dry, definitely not refrigerated. Besides, it won't last long, as everybody who passes the candy dish area will munch as they go by.
