Introduction:Michigan is my home state, and I am very proud to say so. I love Michigan! So it's probably no surprise that I love children's books that feature Michigan. Here are my top five kids books about Michigan.
This great alphabet book showcases the Great Lakes State's geography, history, events, people, and accomplishments. Whether you are from Michigan or not, you can appreciate the creative and fun way that Michigan is explored through this educational book.
This great book has beautiful oil paintings by Jan Bower throughout, features real Michigan kids (and their art), is filled with rhyming verse, and gives little tidbits of information about Michigan on every page. It is a great book for anyone, but especially for other kids who can claim "I'm a Michigan kid!"
"The Legend of Michigan" is an inventive and creative story that explains through folklore and brilliant imagery how Michigan came to be. It is a great book for children everywhere, and especially those in Michigan.
This is another "The Legend of..." book. In this one, we hear the legend of Mackinac Island and how it came to be. I actually just read this one for the first time (in my late twenties) and I can't wait until I can share it with the children in my family. It is such a stunning book!
The tagline on the cover of "Weird Michigan" reads: "Your travel guide to Michigan's local legends and best kept secrets." Sounds cool, right? Granted this is not specifically a children's book; it's more of a coffee table book... but that just means that it is an enjoyable read for people of all ages. I included it here because you can share the fun facts with young kids and older kids can read the book for themselves without feeling too overwhelmed. Plus, like I hinted at before... it's a cool book!
There are several other great "The Legend of..." books that are centered around Michigan, including "The Legend of the Petoskey Stone," "The Legend of Leelanau," and "The Legend of Sleeping Bear." Another great book to check out is not really about Michigan, but it features a Michigan dog. It's called "Gas Station Charlie," it's by Karen G. Kraushaar and Doris Kay Kraushaar, and it's about Charlie, a real Michigan dog who worked at a real gas station in Michigan. (The REAL Michigan)
