New Year's Eve is a great holiday! For those of you who will be settling in for a movie marathon on New Year's Eve, here are some movies to choose from that feature the great holiday. Watched with company or alone, all of these movies capture the spirit of New Year's Eve in their own way. Here they are: The Top Five New Year's Eve Movies. Enjoy!
This classic movie musical stars Bing Crosby as Jim Hardy, a man who, after a heartbreak, opens an Inn that is only open on holidays. (The grand opening even takes place on New Year's Eve!) It features many great songs including "Let's Start the New Year Right," a song that's just perfect for New Year's Eve.
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are great as Harry and Sally, two people who meet coincidentally, spend a long car trip together, think they hate each other, discover they love each other, and try to figure out friendship between men and women. It is one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time, with many memorable scenes and quotes("I'll have what she's having.") PLUS, some very important things (and some very romantic lines) occur during a New Year's Eve party.
In this update of "The Poseidon Adventure" (also a good choice to watch) passengers and crew members on a luxury liner are celebrating on New Year's Eve when a huge wave comes and turns the ship upside down. Suddenly, the celebration is over as a group of strangers band together to survive. This is a good one that men can watch, women can watch, AND men and women can watch together; it has something for everyone!
"Rent" is a movie about a group of modern bohemian friends in New York City. It begins and ends on Christmas Eve, but many eventful things take place on New Year's Eve as well. In fact, on New Year's Eve the bohemians sing "It's gonna be a happy New Year!" as they celebrate together, even though they are dealing with poverty, drug abuse, homophobia, hunger, HIV, and personal demons... and breaking into an apartment building. "Rent" reminds us to be grateful; to live for the moment and enjoy every day; to live our dreams and fight for our rights; and it reminds us how powerful love is and how important it is to share with others. In the song "Seasons of Love," they ask "How do you measure... a year?" The answer?: "Measure in love."
Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) makes the list because she begins her diary as a New Year's resolution... and we are all so thankful for that. Watching these movies is like getting to know Bridget ourselves, and she is such a joy to know! She's cute, insecure, flawed, funny, amazing, and someone I would love to get drunk with! This one is typically better for a girl's night or a New Year's Eve night in alone.
Other great New Year's Eve movies include: "The Holiday," "It's a Wonderful Life," and "Happy New Year Charlie Brown."
Thanks for all the wonderful comments. wokhomeunion, I love "When Harry Met Sally" too. That's why it HAD to be on here! haha Traqqer, I'm glad I gave you an idea for a movie to rent. You probably have to like musicals to like "Holiday Inn," so hopefully you do (that goes for "Rent" too). penelope7... great minds think alike! haha jseven... I feel ya on the cruise hesitations, but everyone I know who's been on one has loved it, so maybe there's not too much to worry about. Then again, I don't have Josh Lucas or Leo DiCaprio to save me in real life if something DOES happen... so maybe stickin' to the beach is a better plan! haha Thanks BigD for the compliment, and thanks IzzyDuncan for the suggestion of "Bringing Up Baby." My mom and sister love that movie! I probably do too, but it's been ages since I've seen it. I should rent it soon. :)
Again everyone, thanks again for commenting. :)
Great list! I always enjoy "Bringing Up Baby" on New Year's Day.
Great suggestions for a night at home!
I love Holiday Inn, course I'm such a nostalgia fan!
Poseidon made me afraid to ever go on a cruise ship for years, then I started getting over it and watched Titanic. I think I will stick with a condo by the beach if I ever vacation in a warm place. lol~then people have to throw in hurricanes! Geesh~
Nice list of movies for New Year's Eve. I thought I was the only person who thought of things like this. I like it!
Good suggstions. Haven't heard of Holiday Inn, but will now plan on renting it.
