Introduction:As I struggle to think of a non-video game top five I can do, I figure to buy myself more time, why not list my top five home video game consoles? I doubt I'll ever bother with portable ones by the way. Anyway, I've played a good variety of video games from all different systems in my life and I love a lot of them so this has to be the hardest list I've done so far.
This is not a unique choice by any means. The PS2 is the best selling video game console of all-time and has survived throughout two prosperous video game generations. Let me put it like this, the PS2 was released in the year 2000 & the last game released for it came out earlier this year. The PS2 left behind one of the best and most expansive gaming catalogs in video game history. This includes some of the best wrestling games of all-time, Smackdown Vs. Raw 2006 & Here Comes The Pain. Some of the best RPG's with the Xenosaga trilogy & the original Disgaea. Some of the best fighting games of all-time with Soul Calibur III and Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3. Some of the best platformers with Ratchet & Clank and I can go on and on like by mentioning Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, one of the few games I consider to be perfect. The PS2 also has my favorite controller in gaming history.
The SNES has my second favorite controller in gaming history. I'll be honest, depending on what day you catch me, this could easily be number one. When you get right down to it, when it comes to variety of great games, the PS2 easily is the best and the reason why it won today. However, when it comes to the genre I love the most, side-scrolling platformers, there isn't a single console that holsters as many great games as the SNES. The Donkey Kong Country trilogy is in my opinion, the best platformers in history. Super Mario World is fantastic as is it's prequel Yoshi's Island. Kirby Super Star was great. There is an entire ocean full of great platformers but that's not all it has. It also has a great collection of RPG's. The other genres aren't as showcased here but for me, it doesn't need anything more.
Funnily enough, I don't really like the main conceit of this console. Which was to put focus on motion controls, I'm just not a fan of motion controls in gaming. Yet, this is my third favorite not because of the games really. In fairness, I do love that it reintroduce the side-scrolling platformers as a main genre to the public again and I consider Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of my all-time favorite games but a video game console is so much more than just it's games nowadays. I love the Wii for stuff like the virtual console, which is a store to buy all video games from Nintendo's extensive library. I've never would've been able to beat all the Donkey Kong Country games without this option. Or re-live a bunch of old favorites like Mario Kart 64 without it. Also, I use it for Netflix a lot which is just another great feature and I love that I can play all my Gamecube games on it. I know it's odd to place a game console this highly on merits such as backward compatibility or Netflix but it makes it an all-purpose console for me and I really like that.
I can't put this over the Wii just because I can use the Wii as a surrogate Gamecube but that doesn't change the fact that when I used the Gamecube for itself, it left quite the impression on me. I said during the top five Gamecube Gamees (because I didn't catch that typo), the top three of that system could be my number one an anytime and I meant that. Add in Animal Crossing, and I don't think there is a single system I've spent more time playing at any point in time. I've dedicated at least a week of my life to each of those four games and I don't regret a second lost.
This was a really tough choice between the PS3 & the N64. Ultimately I went with the PS3 because the N64 had a terrible controller & lacked RPG's. Also, being the most recent system on my list, I've spent more time playing it than the rest so that affects things. Still, along with being my second Netflix system, my blue-ray player, it also holds a lot of great game. Sonic Generations is the best Sonic game in years. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten is my second favorite RPG of all-time & Soul Calibur V had one of the best gameplay for a fighting game I've ever played (unfortunately, all it really had going for it was gameplay). I'm also a big anime fan and its got plenty of great ones I can't wait to play like One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 and J-Stars Victory Vs. Finally, it also provided us Heavy Rain, which is one of the greatest experience one can have in the world of gaming.
And there you have it, those are my top five favorite home video game consoles! I have played the X-Box & the 360 but neither really did it for me but at least the 360 is a solid system. Outside of that, I also played the Sega Genesis, which would I suppose be the honorary number seven after the N64. I haven't gotten any from the most recent generation yet and while I do plan to get all of them, the only one I'm really interested in getting at the moment is the Wii U. If you have any different favorites, let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading!
