Introduction:These stories all take place in Sarasota, Florida where I lived a neighborhood with some eagles.
I know that I should be saying how majestic the eagles were and how patriotic I felt seeing them, and I was, but they were also very annoying, too. At dark-thirty, a lone eagle would sit in my neighbor's huge tree and trumpet its distinctive cry. God bless America, puh-leeze!
One time, I saw an eagle fly far over some trees and the dive down fast out of sight. Then a minute later, I saw him fly by with a big fish in its claws. It was time for dinner!
Their nest was across the street behind a neighbor's house. Like most eagles' nests, it was really big. I learned later that eagles will just keep building on top of each prior year's nest until the whole thing falls to the ground. No one said they were the brightest birds!
One evening, we were eating dinner when a huge eagle flew into our backyard to catch a rabbit. It was like living in the Nature Channel in Sarasota.
One day, our first Golden Retriever came in with a nasty wound on top of his head. Our conclusion was that an eagle pecked him. Ow!
I loved living near the eagles even though they were annoying and somewhat violent. They are part of a thriving ecosystem. Some day I would love to live near them again some day.
