Introduction:The main lure of any shopping mall is of course to lure in shoppers who will spend money at one of their many merchants. There are, however, many things to do at a mall other than shop!
People watching is a fun pass time no matter where you are. Since malls are full of people passing by, the mall is a great place to people watch! Pick a seat and enjoy the show - if you sit and watch long enough you might even see some funny happenings.
Some people like to sit together and watch people and make a game out of making story about passersby such what they are in the mall for, how they know each other, etc. Sometimes just looking at other people's fashions are enough of a distraction to help pass the time.
Malls are a great place to go and walk for exercise. Just pick an end and walk the length and back. Try walking on one level in one direction and another level on the return trip to keep it interesting.
Many malls open before the retail shops do, making it a great time for walkers since the mall isn't crowded with shoppers. Check the hours of your local mall and see if you can walk there before the stores open for business.
Often, people walk in the mall in groups or "walking clubs." If you walk in the mall at the same time every day, you may see some of the same people each day as well, don't hesitate to ask about joining their group. Or, you can always recruit a few friends and start your own walking group.
Many malls have a range of food choices from sit down restaurants to grab and go type places to food courts. A food court is a great place to grab a bit to eat, especially if everyone in the group is looking for something different to eat. At the mall's food court everyone can eat something different, yet still all eat together. Sit down restaurants are often located in or outside of shopping malls to offer shoppers a place to eat after shopping, but you don't have to be a patron of the mall to eat at them.
Almost every mall has at least one beauty salon. Many larger malls have a few to choose from. Salons in shopping malls may offer services such as hair cuts, manicures, pedicures, facials and even massages. Some malls even have "kids-only" hair cutting establishments that are decorated and geared for kids!
From book signings to magic shows to cooking demonstrations, shopping malls often offer some sort of entertainment for patrons to enjoy. Celebrities sometimes make appearances in malls as well. Though these types of activities are usually planned for weekends, check your mall's events calendar to see what upcoming events they have planned.
Other things to do at a mall besides shop include get an eye exam and/or glasses, book a trip, have a troubleshoot a problem with a cellphone (many carriers have stores or kiosks in malls), look at puppies in the pet store or have a scavenger hunt!
