Introduction:I love the movies. My friends often ask "how is it you know so much about Hollywood's Golden Age?" "My mom," I tell them. If there is a flat-screen TV in Heaven, these are the leading men whose Hollywood classics my mom is watching.
Newman was my mom's absolute favorite actor. Blue eyes and good looks -- she couldn't get enough of him. Her favorite Newman film was "Hud." "Hud" told the story of the mean-spirited Hud, a young man constantly at odds with his father in this 1963 modern-day Western. The movie was based on the Larry McMurtry novel.
As seen in the above example with Paul Newman, my mom was drawn to movies that focused on alienated young men. James Dean's 1955 classic "Rebel Without a Cause" may have been her all-time favorite movie. The first and best of Hollywood movies to focus on troubled teens, "Rebel" won writer Nicholas Ray a screenwriting Oscar.
My mom loved the classy, urbane Grant in his role in "The Philadelphia Story." She went along for the roller-coaster ride with Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest." But her favorite Cary Grant movie was the India-set classic, "Gunga Din," based on the Rudyard Kipling story.
With Montgomery Clift we're back to the moody leading man. My mom's favorites were 1951's "A Place in the Sun," the movie version of the Theodore Dreiser novel "An American Tragedy." "The Misfits," 1961, was an emotional movie for my mom. It was the final movie for Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe prior to their untimely deaths; Clift himself was to die a few years later at age 45.
Matinee idol Tyrone Power made my mom's list as Number One Swashbuckler. Her favorites were Power's portrayal as Zorro in 1940's "The Mark of Zorro," and as the dashing bullfighter, Juan Gallardo, in 1941's "Blood and Sand." This bullfighting classic was based on the novel "Sangre y Arena" by renowned Spanish novelist Vicente Blasco Ibanez.
Thank you, all, for your kind comments. I'm glad this prompted some trips down memory lane for some. @listmaker My regards to your 94 year old mom.
