Introduction:Promoting ourselves doesn't come easy for some of us, mainly because unfounded beliefs get in our way.
Let go of the idea that promoting your writing is self-centered. It isn't. Promoting simply means getting your writing in front of readers. They can choose for themselves if they want to read it, but if you don't put it out there, they'll never get that choice. Think of it as providing a service to your readers. Make it easy for them to find your work.
Many refrain from promoting their writing because they are afraid of embarrassing themselves. The fear that what they've written may contain an error, or that others may think it is lame, keeps many writers from promoting their work. Forget about being embarrassed. No one's perfect. All writers make errors. Take some pride in what you do and get out there and promote it to others.
I've struggled with the fear of spamming others. I felt like I was invading their space. I'm still cautious about where I promote, but social networks aren't a place for shyness. Take a look at your twitter account. Do see anyone worried about invading your space? Use it wisely and your worries about spamming will soon disappear.
Accept the fact that no writer thinks they are good enough. We are a group of self-critical people who always think what someone else has written is far better than our own. Silence the voice that says you aren't good enough. Do your best to provide the information your readers seek and promote it with pride. If you don't think your work is any good, no one else will either.
Not knowing how is not an excuse to sit idly by and hope that readers will magically find your work. Join twitter, join Facebook, visit forums and get active.
All that is holding you back is your thinking. Change your thinking about promoting and you will be on your way to increasing your reader base and finding success as an online writer.
Haven't been here for awhile bUt enjoyed reading this one.
Great list. I've often avoided promoting my own work because of number 1 & 3 mostly. A little bit of four too (the others never applied to me). Been thinking of getting a Twitter soon to help promote my lists (and future stuff I plan to work on) and this just seems like a really well-written message that I was thinking in the right direction.
I had to get over all of those worries!
Nothing to stop us now, lets get to promoting!!!
Thank you for these tips. I'll try to take them to heart.
I have gotten a lot of hits to my AC articles by putting the link on Fanpop also. They have groups covering everything you could think of.
Very good! I guess, it does not pay to be overly shy about yourself or what you do when it comes to promoting your work.
Another great list - thanks! :-)
Promoting your work is just as important of writing it. Wonderful list.
If you don't blow your own horn, no one else will! I'm a firm believer in promoting your work. I've seen my earnings double and triple in just a short time from promoting.
If you produce quality work, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Go ahead and promote.
You made a lot of good points in this list. Thank you for writing it.
I'm one of those who steers clear from spamming which is why I don't post on FB unless it's a REALLY good article. Twitter is fair game though!
