Introduction:So you just heard about this card game or saw someone else play and decided to give it a round yourself? That's great the more the merrier. Here are some things you should know before jumping in. These are not defined in granite, but they do help when your going to build your first deck.
In Magic lands are what give you the power and any deck without a good number of lands has problems playing what you need, and when you need it. Most decks run at about a third to a half depending on how complicated your mana needs are. Starting out a good rule of thumb is two non land cards to one land.
If you are starting out the make a deck with only one color and branch out form there. Since there is only one color needed you will most often get the mana you need. When you build more colorful decks up to the full five colors then you have to be really precise in your mana.
Your deck will have every thing shuffled up before play so make sure to split the lands up in something called prepping. You prep a deck by just alternating as you see fit between lands and non land cards. Since you are going to shuffle it will randomize it to a legal degree. Sleeves help so you can shuffle like a regular deck of cards without ruining your new toys.
Most sleeves came in packs of sixty so one pack of sleeves can cover your deck. Pick a design you like as well, and with a little searching you can find a design you will love.
Creatures will be playing the part of your army and to play them you have to pay the mana cost in the upper left corner. You do this by turning the mana sideways and putting the creature card down. If someone has a card to counter it then it never hit the field. If someone destroys it otherwise then it does and if the creature has any special effects then you can use it.
Sometimes creatures will have special words like trample or flying and each one of those words will mean that they can do something or only certain kinds of creatures can defend. Look them up at your own pace
Sorcery and instant spells are going to be your plays often time doing just as much as your creatures so make sure to have a fair number of good cards to pull from when you need it.
Sorcery are spell cards that can only be played on your turn. Often they will work with powering your creatures or doing damage directly. Since you only star with twenty life it does not take much to get pushed in to a defensive position
Instants are a faster speed and can be played on your opponents turn as well as yours. You will find a lot of counters, quick kill cards and other things that essentially mucks up the plans of the opponent.
This is a game first and foremost and as soon that you don't enjoy it then it becomes a chore. Your going to meet a lot of different people from the oldest to the youngest and pro tour on down.
