Recently a rare oarfish, showed up in the waters of Santa Cantalina island, in California, deceased. This rare creature is known as "sea serpents" in nautical legends.
Oarfish are the longest fish in the world, and the fish that was found in Cali. measured 18 feet long!
The Guiness Book of World Records has the longest oarfish recorded as 36 feet long.
Oarfish are rarely seen, as they are known to dive at depths of more than 3000 feet.
They feed on zooplankton, as well as tiny shrimp, euphausiids, jellyfish, squid and small fish. Their predators are large, open-ocean carnivores.
In the ocean, they stand straight up and down, and they have multiple fins of bright crimson color, red plumes on their head and a silvery slim body.
The fish have no commercial value and their meat is inedible.
They are found in the Mediterranean and the East Atlantic ocean.
It is also known as a ribbonfish, and the "King of Herrings". It can get washed up on shore after violent storms.
