Introduction:Women have many excuses to neglect mammogram screening.
Some women will say that they do not have time for mammogram screening. They do not realize that the entire procedure takes about 20 minutes. Appointments can be made when it is convenient. Most facilities are open early in the morning and late in the evening.
There is no question that mammogram screening comes with some discomfort. The breasts do have to be flattened in order to get the best X-ray pictures. However, that part of the procedure only takes a few seconds. Most people can handle it for that long.
Many people think that if they have no symptoms or a family history of breast cancer, there is no need for mammogram screening.
In most detected cases, there is no family history. Early breast-tumors are too small to feel and cause no symptoms, but they are found with mammograms. When caught early, they are highly treatable and lives are saved.
Mammogram screening is covered by most insurance plans. They are also covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Free and low-cost mammograms are available to those without insurance through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
The new digital mammograms have a lower radiation dosage than the older film ones. They are also better at detecting cancers in denser tissue. About 25 percent less radiation is used with digital mammograms. Those who are concerned with the dosage should look for a facility that offers digital-technology.
Yearly mammogram screening for all women over 40 is recommended by The American Cancer Society. Digital mammograms are considered to be the best kind.
I prefer Thermography,(infra-red) heat thermo's that can detect breast cancer 10 years in advance. I believe someday it will replace the painful mammogram. Many clinics are using both procedures to detect breast cancer.
I keep putting off mine because of #2. It really does pinch and I'm a big baby. But this list was a great reminder of why I need to get 'em done.
On the spot list! The last time I went, it was suprisingly easy and did not hurt. I was amazed! The room was dimly lit and there was the sound of water from a tranquil water fountain. It was quite nice and over before I knew it. And...the best thing was that it was not uncomfortable. High 5
Terrific list. The truth is that digital mammograms really do not hurt unlike the old way that really was uncomfortable. I had a scare (partially due to neglect) and I will NEVER neglect to go for my mammogram again! High 5
Can only give you a Hi5, not qualified to comment since this is a rather gender specific list.
I am one who opted out because of the radiation and I'm waiting for the infra-red one to come closer to my area.
Certainly not my favorite time of the year. Great post. This is something that is very important for woman to make sure that they take the time to get theirs done. H5.
