Introduction:If you like in an areas where fire ants are prevalent, you know how scary they can be. Here are a few ways to get rid of them.
Don't just grab that roach spray- the poison spray you need to use has been especially created to kill fire ants. If you use any other kind, you risk giving yourself a false sense of security when the colony is not killed.
This is an old way to get rid of fire ants, but it's a useful one. And best of all, it's practically free. The downside is that its dangerous and extremely time consuming. You may have to use boiling water half a dozen times to penetrate the colony, and you put yourself close to the ant hill when you do so.
There are ingredients that you can use to make your own fire ant poison. Using s small, granular protein source, sugar and powdered boric acid is a popular way to kill the ants effectively. You will likely have to tinker with the amounts to ensure that you get the right formulation to kill the type of fire ants that you have.
While this isn't necessarily advised, one of the old-fashioned methods of killing fire ants is to douse the ant mound in kerosene and to set it on fire. Needless to say, this can be dangerous if all the proper precautions aren't taken.
If you can sprinkle boric acid thinly enough around the top of the mound and you do it often, it is possible to get the ants to track the powder back down into the mound to kill the queen. This can take time, however, and it can be difficult to tell how much acid to sprinkle. If you lay it too thickly, the ants will simply avoid it.
