Introduction:The SNES is one of the greatest video game systems of all-time and arguably my favorite. It has a plethora of fantastic games and I'm here to count down my five favorite. Now, I still play SNES games so a few can't make the list because I haven't gotten far enough in them too. These games include Chrono Trigger, Dragon Ball Z Super Saiya Densetsu, Earthbound, Final Fantasy Kefka, Flintstones The Treasure of Sierra Madrock and Treasure Hunter G. Among others, so this list may be revisited way down the line if upon near completion, these games crack the top five. Also, as always one per series, not one per franchise. There is an important distinction there. Finally, exclusively to these lists only, no compilation games. I love Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World as much as the next guy, heck it may even be number one if I counted it but I don't feel it's fair to so I won't be.
The Donkey Kong Country series is probably my favorite video game series, at least for 2D platformers (though the newest additions have there problems) and since 2D platformers are my favorite video game genre, it's a no brainer number one would go to a Country game. Most people would probably rank the 2nd one as the best and yeah, I see where they're coming from but personally, that game didn't toe the line between difficult and fun as well as this game did. There are several levels in DKC 2 that aren't fun at all, just insanely difficult (wouldn't have beaten Screech's Sprint if it wasn't for that glitch). Donkey Kong Country never had that problem, it was usually the right amount of difficulty and fun and when one was left out of the mixture, it was always difficulty, never fun. I also prefer the gameplay dynamic between DK & Diddy rather than Diddy & Dixie though I love Dixie. The bosses are better in the second though.
In what is arguably my favorite Mario game (I may do a list of that down the line but I missed a lot of good ones [Galaxy for example] so probably not), we also get my fourth favorite RPG . . . I mean my second favorite SNES game. I uh, don't really know what to say about this game that I already didn't in my last top five list (except Culex, he was an awesome optional boss) so I'll post a truncated version. I love pretty much every aspect of this game.
I'm aware that Spring Breeze is a simplified remake of Kirby's Dream Land but the rest of it is original content so no, it's not a compilation game. Anyway, I feel the best way to do this is to go through my thoughts on each game in the collection. Spring Breeze was fun but not too memorable. Dyna Blade was funner than Spring Breeze but only worth a playthrough or two. Gourmet Race had good music and was nice to have for variety sake but I never touched it much. The Great Cave Offensive is a lot of fun and one of the best of the game. Revenge of Meta Knight had the best and most memorable story (great characters too). It was a ton of fun to destroy the Halberd and the ending (everything from the fight with Meta Knight onwards) is among my favorites in video game history. Probably my favorite as a kid. Milky Way Wishes is my favorite though, if entirely for the side-scrolling shooter level. Though it had plenty of great things, like the boss with Marx (favorite boss in the game) or the way Kirby's copy ability functions here instead of in every other game. The Arena is good for variety and I do play it a lot. Samurai Kirby was a fun little mini-game. Megaton Punch was a really fun little mini-game.
Like I said, there is a difference between franchise and series. Super Mario World may just be my favorite Mario platform game, with the third Super Mario Bros. as it's main competition. This is one of the main games of my childhood, it's even the first game I ever remember seeing. My brother was playing it while I drank my pee. Anyway, it was just Mario at his best, the castles/bosses were all fun, we had the introduction to Yoshi, the power-ups were a lot of fun (though SMB3 was better in this regard), the boo houses were very fun, the music was great, etc. Wish Luigi wasn't a palette swap but that's why I have Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World.
I'm not much of a sports guy or even a sports video game guy but I have played a few here and there and by far my favorite (out of basketball, baseball, football [both variants], golf & tennis games) is NBA Street Vol 3 featuring Mario, Luigi & Peach but my second favorite would probably be NBA Jam (or Mario Tennis). It's just an extremely fun, solid, exaggerated two-on-two basketball game that is always worth playing. Suffice to say, this game was "On Fire".
Yes, I've played A Link to the Past, it's a good game but I didn't personally love it and the games I listed above I liked better and are from genres that I tend to enjoy more. It's entirely personal but I'm not going to bash the game. Either way, these are currently my five favorite SNES game. Again, I'm still playing so maybe in a few months/years I'll revisit this list with some new additions but as of now, I'm proud of the games I call my five favorites. What are yours?
