Introduction:Are you so busy eating green that you ignore power-packed purple food? Purple foods are packed with disease fighting antioxidants. If you're serious about healthy eating, here are reasons to eat more purple.
Anthocyanins plant compounds or phytochemicals and are praised for powerful health benefits to neutralize free radicals. Studies have shown purple foods containing phytochemicals reduce the risk of certain kinds of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and protect our aging brain. As they are considered anti-inflammatory, anthocyanins would be much more pleasing to our stomach than pills.
If you have recurring urinary tract infections, try eating more purple. They contain proanthocyanidins that line the urinary tract to stop bacteria from clinging to it.
Another phytochemical, resveratrol prevents blood clotting. While it has been proven to lengthen lives of mice and other small animals, whether or not the same anti-aging effects would occur in humans is still to be determined. However, resveratrol is included in some "beauty" supplements.
Eggplant, a member of the nightshade family is purple outside; however, I have never tasted an eggplant I liked.
Purple potatoes are also of the nightshade family. Along with antioxidants, they are rich in vitamin C, iron, potassium and folic acid and contain equivalent amounts of phenonls as Brussel sprouts or broccoli. According to the USDA, the Purple Majesty potato contains roughly two times the amount of anthocyanins found in any other fruit or vegetable.
Plums are also purple outside and are considered a serotonin increasing food. Serotonin is chemical produced in our bodies after eating serotonin increasing foods and is considered a mood-regulator. A lack of serotonin contributes to depression and anxiety.
The exotic acai berry, grown primarily in Brazil, received a lot of press and was even touted as "the fountain of youth". They are low in sugar, but in America we would probably not find the actual berries. Try the juice if you wish, just don't expect overnight miracles.
Purple carrots are supposedly the original carrot. Taste tests have proven that people actually prefer them to the common orange variety.
Berry members of the purple food family include: blackberries, blueberries, muscadine grapes, bilberries and elderberries.
Have you heard of the fad diet, known as The Purple Diet - Hollywood 24-Hour Miracle Cure"? Basically it is a juice diet purported to remove 10 pounds in 48-hours. Although it claims to contain vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, in essence it is just a fancy way to fast. Like any radical diet plan, you should consult your doctor before committing to The Purple Diet.
Purple foods contain a plethora of health benefits and should be included in our healthy eating plan. Be mindful that different varieties of healthy food provide different nutritional benefits.
