Introduction:Early retirement can cause emotional trauma when it is unexpected. Retiring early from a job is not usually something we plan on. Some reasons for leaving the workforce could be because of cutbacks, health or other personal reasons. When plans have not been made, it can be difficult to adjust or to know what to do. Here are some suggestions.
When retiring early happens, some people do not have adequate funds to survive on. In that case, a part time job may be needed to supplement an income. I know many retired people who have started up a business from home. It is something that they enjoy doing. My father-in-law retired at 62 years old and decided to drive a school bus. He loved driving the children to and from school each day. He was always a great driver and drove the bus until he passed away at 84 years old. He considered it working from home because that is where he was most of the day. There are many possibilities like writing articles like this. Discovering them is part of the fun.
Traveling is the most popular thing that retired people look forward to. They like to travel to places they have never been. Some people will purchase a trailer or motor home when retiring early. Others will start banking airline miles so that they can get some free flights to exotic places. There might be a deluxe cruise or another adventure awaiting a traveler experiencing early retirement. There is now more flexibility to go on trips during any season of the year.
Many people never get a chance to read as much as they would like. After early retirement, a person can go to the library any time they want. They can also purchase an e-book reader or a smart phone with the same capability. Reading is good for the brain. Educational books are a way to expand knowledge or to learn something new. It may even give a person the inspiration to write their own book.
Many of us talk about trying out new hobbies someday. Notice that it is always someday. After early retirement, there are no excuses.
There is time to pick up a new hobby. Many retirees learn how to play golf, cook, crochet, knit, paint, do woodworking and collect things. It is also a time to socialize with others who enjoy doing the same hobbies.
It is always great to do something because you want to rather than you have to. Going to work each day is something that a person has to do. After retiring early, volunteering can be rewarding. Retired people who have enough money to live off of can volunteer their time being helpful to the community. Places like hospitals, museums, churches, shelters, schools and youth clubs all could use a little extra help.

Great list of early retirement activities. I used to tell people I was "practicing" to retire when I went part time before actually retiring. I could have learned a lot from your good list of tips. Now I will pass these on to others.
