Introduction:When a disaster happens and you have to leave your home, it is helpful to have things prepared for all family members. There are some items to place in emergency backpacks for children that will help their evacuation move along more smoothly.
Emergency backpacks for children should include warm clothing like jackets, sweaters, sweatpants, sweatshirts, gloves and a hat. Not all emergencies will happen in cold weather, but it is best to be prepared just in case.
No matter what time of year it is, always place extra clothing in a child's emergency backpack. This would include two or more pairs of socks and undergarments. Keep a pair of hard sole shoes close by the backpack in case they are needed to slip on fast.
Emergency backpacks for children should include some items than can be placed in a zip-lock bag. These things include hand sanitizer wipes or gel, pocket facial tissues, hand warmer packets, and an emergency poncho.
A child will feel more secure in an emergency if they have a blanket. It is easier to take an emergency Mylar blanket because it takes less space. These can be purchased at a sporting goods store in the camping section. It is also good to have a flashlight with extra batteries and a whistle the child can blow for help.
Emergency backpacks for children should include some items for stress relief. This will help the child stay busy. Items that can be included are coloring books, crayons, writing paper, pens, pencils, reading books, travel games and other toys like a stuffed animal.
Place the emergency backpacks for children in a place that is easy for them to grab, like under a bed. A child's medications and hygiene items should be brought in a parent's emergency pack.
