Introduction:Most news media outlets capitalize on the innocence of the general public who naively assume that the news sources they access provide comprehensive, accurate, factual news reporting. Sadly, nothing could be further from the (no pun intended) truth.
To whom is the news media accountable? No one but their advertisers, who care only about ratings, not ethics. No organization holds the media accountable for the facts of their reporting.
The news media has a tendency to spend an inordinate amount of time stoking the fires of so called "sensational" news ... murders, national disasters, kidnappings, sex scandals, etc. in hopes of snagging viewers and increasing ratings. This "reporting" often involves a great deal of rehash and filler interviews with "experts" and people related to the story, and monopolizes air time and print space while other news goes unreported.
Over the past 65 years there has been a steady decline in independent ownership of American news media outlets. Today, the vast majority of all news media sources are owned by 6 giant corporations. That this indicates the ability of a few to shape the views and control the flow of information to the American population should be obvious to all.
An organization is comprised of people, and all people are biased. Journalists once made an effort to ignore their personal beliefs and to report events factually. Today this is the exception rather than the norm.
Creating perception in the minds of viewers is the news media's goal, not reporting facts. They want the most inflammatory headline that can get your attention. Why? Viewers and ads. Truth is secondary to their primary agenda.
Another h5. We all have a little bit to do to protect ourselves, don't we?
