Introduction:Thinking too much can drive you crazy. Follow these tips to slow those brain gears down, and bring some mental balance into your head.
Stop. Be still. Notice your surroundings. Use your eyes to look around you. Take note of what you see. Don't evaluate it. Just accept and notice it. Then, close your eyes, and listen. Just take notice of sounds that exist. Then, feel what your body feels. Smell the air. Accept it all. Get in touch with the here and now, and forget about what has been, will be, and might be.
Write down what you are thinking. Spill it all out onto paper. If you're wrestling with problems, write down the questions you are considering. Now you can relax, knowing that you have "parked" your ideas on paper, so you don't have to carry them in your head.
Meditation is a way to clear your thoughts of tangled clutter. It basically reboots your mind. Don't worry, you still have all of your hardware, software, and saved work in your brain to retrieve when needed. Just meditate to give yourself a chance to unplug, and refresh.
Go do something that requires movement, and that is fun. Play miniature golf with some buds. Play a team sport, like soccer, or lacrosse. This gives your over-thinking brain a break, and lets your body do something, instead.
Stop watching, reading, or listening to the news. Avoid any current events information for a full week. It will be hard to do, but it will give you the mental break you need.
Thinking too much means that it is detrimental to you. You have the power to slow your thinking down, and find a more healthy balance for yourself.
Great insight! Thanks for the list. H5
Great list...can relate too.
I have some experience with this, so I can tell you know your stuff. Thanks so much for posting the things I need to remember!
I've read some really good lists on this site, but this one has to be in my personal top 5. Very simple, yet well-written practical advice. Love it!
Nice metaphor, about "rebooting the mind" - through meditation.
A reminder I most definitely needed! My creative brain runs at hummingbird speed... the rest of me, not so much ;)
Great suggestions for shutting of the thoughts. My mind races all the time. I really need to learn to meditate.
I usually can't sleep as I think too much (go figure) so I use re-runs of Frasier which is like a white paper to me. Thinking too much can keep one up at night!
