Introduction:Adequate amounts of B12 are necessary to enhance energy and sustain endurance. Individuals over the age of 60 may not absorb B12 efficiently; and develop a vitamin B12 deficiency. Vegetarians are particularly at risk for B12 deficiency, since it is found primarily in animal foods. However, according to researchers, meat, which is the mainstay of American diets, is now considered as "not a good source" as prescription drugs, cooking and digestive problems interfere with B12 absorption.
Pernicious Anemia is the symptom; an autoimmune inflammation of the stomach is the condition. We may develop this kind of anemia as a result of genetics. If your parents had Pernicious Anemia, it's prudent to have your labs drawn at least annually.
If you notice this combination - sore tongue and/or white spots on tongue, decreased appetite, constipation - take immediate action. While medical professionals think these three symptoms of B12 deficiency are related to stomach inflammation, they aren't positive.
Neurologic symptoms of B12 deficiency include numbness and tingling of limbs: arms and legs. Also one may find walking arduous. If this symptom is left untreated, it may not be reversible with B12 injections or supplements.
A deficiency of Vitamin B12 is obviously not the sole contributor to depression; but studies have proven that about 30% of depressed patients are deficient. Medical professionals aren't able to prove the relationship of these findings, so they suggest screening depressed individuals for B12 deficiency.
If you are a diagnosed diabetic, you may take the prescription drug Metformin, which is suspected to contribute to reduced absorption of B12. While the studies were small and not all agreed, it is wise to have your B12 levels checked frequently while taking Metformin
Gone are the days when physicians thoroughly scrutinized us from head-to-toe, paying particular attention to our hair, tongue, skin and fingernails. As the burden of healthcare is thrust more and more upon the patient, it is imperative that we know the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. In general, know your body and be mindful of unexplained physical and mental changes.
This is so informative. My grandmother's sister died Pernicious Anemia.
Very good list, thank you! H5!
I was reading the other day that vertical redges on the fingernails are also a sign of B-12 deficiency. H5!
