If you decide that you need to return something that you didn't want and you have your sales receipt, you will get the full amount back that you paid for the item. If you do not have the receipt, the store usually gives you the lowest sale price back. Therefor you will be losing money on what you paid for the item.
If you have your sales receipt and you want to return something, the money will come back to you the way you paid for the item. So if you paid cash, you will get the refund back in cash. If it was paid usually a credit card or debit card, the refund will be deducted off of your bank card. If you did not save your receipt, you will most likely get a store credit that will have to be used for a different purchase in the store.
I find that it is always a hassle to return things if you don't have a receipt. Most stores require a picture id to return things. Most stores also need you to fill out a form with your name, address, phone number, and reason for return if you don't have a sales receipt.
Sometimes the stores have to look up the price if you don't have a receipt which could take longer too.
Some stores limit the amount of returns per month, quarter, or year if you don't have a sales receipt. If you have a sales receipt, you can return as many items as you wish with no problems.
Some stores don't allow you to return anything without a sales receipt. You are out of the money then or are stuck with the item that you wanted to return.
It is always best to save your sales receipt at least until you are sure that you don't need to return the item.
Some people like to keep their receipts to match them up on their charge card statement each month to make sure that it is the correct amount that was charged. This is a very good idea to try to get in the habit of doing. Remember, we are all human and everyone makes mistakes. You never know if you might be overcharged for an item. It is best to be certain if you are using a charge card or debit card.
Good list of reasons - thanks!
Very good reasons to save receipts! My mother taught me that very well. :)
I always keep sales receipts. If you buy an item with a warranty, you'll need the sales receipt until the warranty runs out.
I always save my receipts until all items are used, worn, eaten etc. Great list of reasons to save your sales receipts.
Saving the sales receipt can save money too. There are some stores that only return the current price on items and not necessarily what you paid for them if there is not a receipt. Great list here.
Excellent 5's list!
