Introduction:This is a list of my experiences with turtles.
I lived in NJ for 25 years and only found one small box turtle in my yard around 1970. Isn't that sad? My dad let me keep it for a day or two. Never saw one again - even with spending tons of time in the woods.
In Florida, in-between a golf course and a library, there was a pond with a bridge going over it. That pond had at least 50 huge turtles in it all the time. When I first saw it, I thought the pond was full of snakes because of all of their snaky-like heads popping out of the water! Thank goodness they were turtles!
One time, when I was in college, I was driving down the road and I said, "It's funny how I haven't seen a turtle crossing the road in a long time." We turned the corner, and there was a turtle crossing the road! (I love when that kind of thing happens! Makes me feel like I'm right where I should be in my life!)
There were many times in Florida when I stopped my car and helped a turtle cross the road. They're slimy and disgusting to touch, but I still like them!
One time, there was a turtle sitting in the middle of the road and I got out to move it to the side. But this turtle didn't want to be rescued because some horrible, sick person had shot the animal right in the middle if its shell. So it kept going back to the middle of the street, presumably to die. A lady at the scene called animal control. I don't know what happened to the turtle; I suspect it was not a happy ending, though.
