When someone walks into the store, they should be greeted. A heartfelt, glad to see you hello. Post the friendliest, least judgmental person at the front of the store and let her work her charming magic.
First impressions are important. Make your entryway clean and have a clear path to the friendliest person you have posted up front. Look at the entryway everyday. Check the doorknob. If the doorknob is sticky or unsecure, the customer will think that is the type of business you run.
Employees need to know customers are king. Putting away stock is not the most important job. Hanging out at the register is not the most important job. Changing displays is not the most important job. Selling items to the customer is the most important job. Employees' work is about selling.
Change your front displays often to entice the public into your store. Make the display interesting and colorful. Make sure any signs you have on the display have all words spelled correctly. "Brocolli Soup" is not going to sell as well as "Broccoli Soup".
If your employees are having fun and you are having fun, your customers will have fun too. Treat the employees as caring individuals who have families and lives with unexpected twists. Put on contests, buy them matching t-shirts about the promotion going on in your store and celebrate the small things and big things in their lives. You will be rewarded with honorable, hard-working employees.
