Introduction:In this day, cheap eating can be a huge necessity. You want food for your family that's delicious and satisfying. You want food that's nutritious, yet that helps you stay on budget. Here are five of my top favorite meals that do just that.
(If you shop at a discount "dents and dings" grocery for the ingredients, you are way ahead.)
Make your own chile with giant cans of kidney beans, ground beef, lots of onion, and green pepper. Add some canned tomato sauce. Season with cumin and chile powder. Easy. Then, make your own cornbread from scratch, by following the directions on the package of cornmeal. Add a simple green salad. Extra good!
This is a classic. Buy giant jars of spaghetti sauce, and add it to browned ground beef. Cook up some spaghetti. Serve sauce over the pasta. Make garlic bread with cheaper, day-old italian bread sliced down the center. Spread with butter mixed with garlic powder. Brown in the oven. Serve a big, simple green salad on the side with italian dressing. Everybody loves it, and you can feed an army.
A casual lunch or dinner starts with an economy size can of tuna fish. Drain and mix with mayonnaise and chopped celery. Make sandwiches on whole wheat toasted bread. Add lettuce and tomato in the sandwiches. Serve with some carrot and celery sticks you've prepared. Nice!
Lentils are such a good deal. Buy a bag, and follow directions on the back of the bag to make soup. Be sure to include lots of onion and shredded carrots. Add some fresh spinach near the end of cooking. Serve with some warmed bread and butter, and a crisp green salad. That hits the spot!
Cut your scrubbed, whole potatoes into halves, and put into a baking dish. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a whole bunch of chicken thighs into a greased baking dish. Pour bottled barbeque sauce over them. Put the potatoes and chicken in the oven at the same time to bake for 45 minutes. Heat up a giant can of green beans to serve with the chicken and potatoes. Simple and delicious!
These foods are relatively inexpensive, yet the meals they make stick to your ribs.
