Introduction:All of us women know what it's like to have cravings around our time of the month. They grab you and gnaw at you until you satiate their every desire. These are my top five...
Right before I start a new menstrual cycle I crave chocolate in the worst way, usually in the form of dark chocolate. The complexity, the richness, the velvety texture, and the heavenly aroma eat at me until I get my fix.
The ultimate comfort food, even in the middle of winter, is ice cream (which is horrible for us who are lactose-intolerant). It beckons and taunts with its endless variety of flavors, colors, and textures. I definitely get the urge to pop a lactase pill (to counter-act said intolerance above) and pile up the creamy goodness when "Aunt Flo" comes to call.
I don't know if it is the salt or the carbohydrates or just the crunch factor that is calling me; but, when it's time to break out the pads, I have to have a bag of pretzels on hand.
There is actually a good reason to crave this fruit during one's period: potassium. The loss of blood from the body can cause a woman to crave potassium, and what tastier source is there than a nice banana?
I have a major weakness for Mexican food all the time; so, when my hormones are at their craziest, of course I crave this cuisine. Yearning foods like refried beans, rice, tamales, and enchiladas is something I face at the beginning of every cycle...excuse the drool as I type this, haha!
Hormones rage, blood is shed, and in the battle of it all comes the bombardment of desire. Hopefully at least on of the above foods are at hand when Mother Nature strikes!
