Introduction:Everyone wants to be respected for who they are, but gaining that respect isn't always easy. If you struggle with getting respect from those around you, try these tips.
To gain respect from others, showing them respect is the first step. That doesn't mean you must agree with everything they say or do. You can disagree without putting them down or criticizing them. Get in the habit of respecting others opinions and thoughts and they are more likely to listen to your thoughts and ideas.
Everyone respects people who are dependable. That means being there when the other person needs you, showing up on time, and generally keeping your commitments.
Being honest. If others know that they can trust what you say to them, they know they can count on you. No one wants a friend that only says what they want to hear or says one thing and does another. If you want to be respected by others get into the habit of being honest.
Keep your word. If you agree to meet someone or to help them with something, it is important that you keep your word. Knowing you keep your word and don't back out of your commitments builds respect.
Minding your manners may seem like an old fashioned idea, but there is a reason your parents taught you to be polite. When you are polite to others it sends the message that you care about them and their feelings. Be polite to others if you want to earn their respect.
With a little effort, you can gain the respect you deserve, but it does require thinking about others first. If you want to be respected, show others you are worthy of their respect by showing them respect, being honest and dependable, keeping your word and being polite.
