Introduction:Parents sometimes wonder what can be done about indoor activities for kids. During the winter or when the weather is bad, children can easily be bored when they are cooped up inside of the house. Playing electronic games or watching television is not always desirable because it does not promote creativity. There are some rainy day activities that are fun, inexpensive and encourage bonding relationships in families.
Refrigerator magnets can be made by removing the metal lids from cans containing frozen juice or lids used on home canning jars. Trace the lid on a piece of white paper. Cut out the circle and have the children draw a design on the paper and then glue it on the lid. Take a magnet and glue it on the back. This is one of the indoor activities for kids that can keep everyone busy for a while.
Rainy day activities using salt dough can be a lot of fun. Creations are molded into flowers, people, buildings, animals, volcanoes and anything else that the imagination can come up with. Simply mix 4 cups of flour, 1 1/2 cups water and 1 cup of salt for the dough. Add some food coloring if desired. After making the sculptures, bake them in a 350 degree oven for an hour. Take them out and let them completely cool. To make these creations more decorative, paint them with acrylic paint.
Another great example of indoor activities for kids and parents is to take old clothing like T- shirts or pillow cases, decorate them and wear them as costumes. Start gluing on beads, buttons, sequins, ribbons and fabric scraps to faded baseball caps and visors. If using a pillowcase, cut holes out of it for the neck and arms. Draw designs on the fabric with markers or acrylic paints. Decorate with similar items to match the hats. Colored string or ribbon can be used for belts or jewelry. Have each person wear their goofy costume and have a tea party.
Rainy day activities with rice or macaroni take up time and are good for eye-hand-coordination. Have a child draw a picture on a piece of cardboard. Put some different colors of food coloring into several empty containers and start dying some uncooked white rice or macaroni.
Take a toothpick and dip it in some glue. Pick up one grain of rice at a time and fill in the picture. Be more generous with the paste when using the macaroni. After the picture is entirely covered, allow it to dry before displaying it. Use yarn to make macaroni-necklaces if there is any left over.
Indoor activities for kids are supposed to keep them entertained. Children love to shine pennies and make them look as good as new. Have them drop pennies in a bowl with a solution of 4 tablespoons of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt. Stir them around for about a minute with a wooden spoon. Dry them off and polish them with a soft cloth. To make them extra shiny, rub them with a small amount of vegetable oil. Save them to be flattened later as souvenirs in penny press machines.
Great activities to keep kids and parents happy. H5
These are great ways to spend time with kids and make something fun. Love the penny shining activity!
Interesting read, especially the shining pennies part. I have some OLD pennies that I think I'll try to spiff up.
These are such creative and fun indoor activities for kids and parents. They should prevent the blues of cabin fever.
Sounds like some nice bonding time.
