Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA which is The American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals. in 1866 Henry began his plight to protect animals from cruelty, abuse and death. Henry Bergh was born in 1813 and spent a lot of his life fighting for animals whose voices were silent. Henry Bergh lived to be 74 years old possibly because of his great contribution to pet owners, animals and those who like animals. No one actually knows all the good Henry Bergh did while he was alive, but so many documents prove several of his victorious deeds on the part of animals to prevent cruelty to those quiet living creatures. Read on and find out what a true hero Henry Bergh was in his time and how he made living better for animals today.
What became the onset of the American Society for The Prevention of Cruelty To Animals was documented with these statements. Henry was an aristocrat, so he frequently was able to just roam around and enjoy the daily life activities of others. One day he witnessed a man hitting his horse that was pulling a cart. Henry approached this man and reprimanded him for the cruel actions and vowed to put a stop to anyone he saw miss- treating any animal. He lobbied and began what was the American Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals to stop abuse to animals with laws that would protect these God created creatures who could not speak for or protect themselves.
Henry Bergh not only tackled one person, but took on P.T. Barnum, the ring leader of the biggest circus performance in the United States. Henry was seen putting down fresh water for stray dogs and any animal he found that was not given water to drink. It was through Henry Bergh's marvelous invention that an artificial pigeon was substituted for the real live birds in a sport. So many of Henry Bergh's deeds were done in the courts and through legislative efforts for animal safety, comfort and to preserve better conditions for all sorts of animals. It was through Henry Bergh's efforts that a child, Mary Ellen Wilson was rescued from her abuser. It was then the formation of a child protective agency in New York that combined the good efforts of Henry.
The ASPCA was so effective, but the people who approached abusers needed some strength behind them. Some were given police academy training in the use of firearms so they could make arrests and also keep protecting animals from being abused. This is the only time anyone but police were permitted to attend the academy and train there. These men and women were ostracized and criticized by the media as was Henry Bergh for helping animals. They relentlessly kept their focus and because of their actions, we now have many other organizations who help rescue abused animals. DO NOT BELIEVE that the Humane Society of the United States does anything but take your money for their own special interests in court. The HSUS does not have a shelter with animals in it! DO NOT DONATE THERE. DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL NO KILL SHELTERS. The SPCA of today works hand and hand with police with weapons if needed.
You will find many SPCA organizations in every state. Each is as different in some respects and so common in others. Ask questions about the animal organizations you wish to donate time and money to. It is best to consider the NO KILL shelters since they provide great programs to find homes for the pets that are temporarily living in those shelters. They mostly neuter or spay the cats and dogs so they do not have offspring that will again end up with no home. Do not take for granted that a shelter is NO KILL. Ask and find out for sure before supporting that organization.
