Introduction:White refined rice is a waste of money and energy used to cook it. Brown rice is satisfying and good for you. Give it a chance; you may prefer its nutty taste over bland white rice, especially after learning the health benefits of brown rice.
Why would anyone want to eat rice that vitamins are milled out of and processed back into? In order to make white rice from brown rice, the subaleurone layer is stripped away. The subaleurone layer of the rice grain contains the majority of healthy fiber and nutrients.
According to the macrobiotic system, grains are balanced in Yin and Yang. Moreover, brown rice is a perfectly balanced Yin and Yang food. (The macrobiotic system looks at the large view of life, and is commonly used among those who are "beyond" vegetarians.)
If you accidentally burn a pot of brown rice, don't despair. Eat the rice and soak the pot overnight in water and baking soda. In the book, "Zen Macrobiotic Cooking", the author Michel Abehsera states, "Burned rice is good for you. Your body likes the carbon."
Eating brown rice lowers blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, as brown rice blocks the angiotensin 2 enzyme, a component of the subaleurone layer. An excellent source of fiber, it also serves to lower cholesterol. Additionally, whole grains contain lignans that serve to reduce the risk of certain types of breast cancer.
Elson Haas, M.D. of Preventive Medical Center in California prescribes brown rice mixed with banana as food therapy for diarrhea, "Rice acts as a bulking agent and is gentle enough on your system". He advocates eating brown rice for "a day or so" and the diarrhea should improve.
The next time you "come down" with the flu start on brown rice when you feel like eating. Julian Whitaker, M.D. of Whitaker Wellness Center in Newport Beach, California suggests, "Once your stomach can handle it, stick with easy-to-digest, high nutrient foods such as dry toast and bananas and rice."
My husband didn't share this story until after we'd been together several years. (When we merged households, he came with a great vacuum cleaner and a disgusting three-pound sack of white rice.)
He described my reaction to the brown rice like this: "Bonnie, you put your hands on your hips and said, "'we don't eat white rice in this house!"'
What can I say? I'm pretty emphatic about the health benefits of brown rice.

We love wild rice and brown rice in our family. H5!
Some types of brown rice don't taste as good as others, but I love the jasmine and basmati varieties. No white rice for me.
Great list of health reasons.
I fully agree with the taste and nutritional contents of brown rice. Very well detailed for learning for those not knowing. You are a good teacher and explain this well.h5
I used to think the idea of brown rice was yucky. Then I started to use it in place of white. I am sold. Great list!
btw- This list is featured on The Discovery Health Journal. http://www.discoveryhealthjournal.com
I'm glad that brown rice is so healthy because I love eating it. It's got a different (but good) texture from white rice and I love preparing meals such as stir fry using it. Thanks for your wonderful health list.
