These are the types of heroic feats that will stand the test of time.
In 1941 DiMaggio hit safely in 56 consecutive games and during that period batted .408, hit 15 home runs and had 55 runs batted in. After the streak ended, he began another 16 game streak and ended up hitting safely in 72 of 73 games when the two were combined, thus earning his streak the accolade as "the most enduring record in sports".
In 1945, Byron Nelson won 18 times on the PGA Tour including 11 straight. And before you retort that the competition in 1945 wasn't like it is today, stop. A win is a win - period. This record will most likely never be broken.
Ripken played in 2632 consecutive games, dwarfing Lou Gehrig's streak of 2130 games. For the naysayers who do not consider this one of the all time great sporting accomplishments should ask themselves this....Have you gone to work 2632 days in a row without missing a day for illness or any other reason? I thought not.
During the 1961-1962 season, Oscar Robertson a Cincinnati Royal guard averaged a triple-double for the entire season, a feat never again repeated. He finished the season with 30.8 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game and 11.4 assists per game.
In 1968, St. Louis's right-handed ace Bob Gibson finished the season with an Earned Run Average of 1.12. Oh and by the way, the same year he threw 28 complete games. Not bad eh?
Don't think Cal Ripken's streak will ever be broken .. at least not for the next several decades.
