Fleas can spread tapeworm and can make a pet anemic, if your cat or dog has fleas you owe it to your pet to get rid of them safely.
Note many over-the-counter flea medications, including flea collars, are not always safe and have been linked to pet deaths.
The flea comb is cheap and safe, but involves you combing through your pet's fur, removing fleas and disposing of them. Flea combs will catch fleas and most eggs.
Your house should be vacuumed daily if fleas have been a problem. You need to suck them up, as well as their eggs. Dispose of the bag after vacuuming.
The pets bed should be washed, if the dog sleeps on your pet be sure to wash your bed sheets too. Any plush toys that belong to your pet should be washed, or put in a bag and put in your freezer for 2 weeks.
If the above methods do not work you should speak to your vet about safe flea medications, being aware that many over-the-counter flea medications (including flea collars) have been linked to pet deaths even when used correctly, but veterinarian products are safe.
You can give your pet a flea bath, or take it to a groomer and have them give it a flea bath. If you find a flea wash it down the drain, or stun it in cold water. Flea baths do not offer long term protection and should not be repeated too often.
