You don't need all the latest gadgets and toys for a newborn, as most babies only want to eat, sleep and cuddle during their first few months at home. The most useful items for newborn babies aren't just necessities for the first few months - many will also see them through their first year and beyond.
This is a number one must-have - before you even leave the hospital! Purchase a good quality new car seat for an infant. Never buy car seats used. Even a small car accident can undermine the integrity of the seat.
Stock up on disposables before hand, but skip the newborn sized ones until after baby is born - many newborns are too big for those small nappies. The same goes for cloth diapers. Stock up on the larger covers and skip the newborn sizes. Prefolded cloth diapers fit newborn through toddler, depending on how you fold them. The hospital usually supplied enough newborn sized diapers to get baby through the first week or two, and after that they are ready for the next size up.
Bottle, nipples and formula are a must if you plan to bottle feed. If you are breastfeeding, invest in a pump and a couple of bottles just in case you can't always be there at feeding time.
Newborns outgrow their clothes quickly and you'll likely get enough "going out" outfits as gifts. Instead, invest your money in some one-piece body suits with snap crotches and a couple of sleep sacks to keep junior warm at night.
A crib, bassinet or similar is a must, even if you plan to co-sleep. Your newborn needs a place to nap safely even when you aren't able to lie down with them, and an adult bed is no place for a newborn to sleep alone.
Don't go overboard purchasing items for your new baby, no matter how tempting it is. Stock up on some useful items for newborn babies before bringing baby home, then fill in afterward as you recognize a need. Otherwise you end up with a lot of expensive items that looked cute or useful in the store, but are never taken out of the box once you get them home.
