These are the top five television shows that will help you get an overall understanding of what it was like to grow up in the 1960's. If you are fifty-something, you will enjoy the memories.

The Beverly Hillbillies

Although most people did not have the amenities that Jed, Granny, Jethro, and Ellie May enjoyed, this show is priceless 1960's culture. Set in the area of California that shaped so much of the "mod" years, this show is tops for pop culture information about the time.

The Andy Griffith Show

The Andy Griffith show first debuted in 1960, and it truly did paint a good picture of small town life during the decade. Helen Crump has that eternally 1960's pixie bouffant hair cut and sleeveless shift dress.

Bewitched

Samantha and Darrin were the quintessential 1960's couple living in a house that showed the true feeling of what a new house would look like in the 1960's. This program also is a good fashion window into the times; Samantha was a perfectly dressed young housewife.

That Girl

That Girl gave us a look into the life of a single girl in the city during the 1960's. That iconic flip hairdo was forever associated with Marlo Thomas. She was a struggling actress living in her own apartment, but she was engaged with a nearby fiance to look after her. Women were still just not able to do it themselves at this point!

The Monkees

The Monkees were a singing group, for those of you who may not know. They were the first to use the video format for their music. The show was non-sensical and the footage that accompanied their songs was even more so. The show is a perfect view of the 1960's rock and roll bands in the early days. Davy Jones was a heartthrob for young girls everywhere.




Final Thoughts

The 1960's were a colorful time both literally and figuratively. These are the top five programs that will help the student of 1960's culture get a real understanding of the times.
