A Colonial type home is two story home with the kitchen, living room, and other main living area on the main level. The bedrooms are on one or more floors. The bathroom are also on one or more floors. A colonial home also has a basement.
A Ranch is a home where the main living area as well as all the bedrooms and the bathrooms are all on the main level. They are a one story home with a simple design.
A Tri Level also known as a Split Level is a home that you enter the house on the second level. The living room, kitchen, and dining room are all on the second level and the bedrooms and one or more bathrooms are on a level above the second level. The family room is on a level below the entry level. There are only a few steps to go up the the upper levels compared to a colonial whose homes have quite a few steps.
A Saltbox home is a home with a long pitched roof that slopes down the back. It is usually a wooden frame home. It has one story in the back of the house and two stories in the front of the house.
The Cape Cod homes were popular in the early 1900s. They were first built in the late 17th century. They have anywhere from one to one and a half stories.
These are the main types of homes. There are some similarities and yet many differences in each of the homes. Some people prefer one story homes while others prefer a two story home.
