Chicago has bragging rights on Hot Dogs and Pizza. I don't know why but it does. Those of us who love hot dogs generally like them in similar ways......
Ever since I had my first pure beef hot dog all decorated and pretty and smelling so good, I have bought the poppy seed bun as the 'holder'. Can I taste the poppy seeds? I'm not sure. All I know is that it makes the hot dog bun so much more attractive and tasteful!
I'm pretty much a snob when it comes to hot dogs. I mean, you sort of have to be. My hot dog has to be a brand of pure beef. I don't mind passing up those hot dogs filled and pumped with air, I can't taste them once cooked anyway. But pure beef dogs are so much more tasty and meaty. Ummm.
Wow, that neonish-green relish not only tastes sweet and tangy but really makes that hot dog look smashing too. Sometimes I settle for regular green relish, of course. Well, usually I do anyways. But that really loud green neon relish, when I get it.......oh man! And for those of you that love those small sport peppers, they just don't seem to work as well anywhere else except with a pure beef dog!
If you're out and indulge with the fresh raw onion on your dog, I'm sure you were smart enough to put some freshening breath aids in your purse or pocket, right? No? It's okay if you didn't. Sometimes you have to pay a price for goodness but hurry and get something to refresh yourself. Speaking of smells, don't onions smell good all mixed in with the other hot dog condiments? And doesn't that redness of that ripe tomato make the colors make sense?!
Mustard has to have one of its best uses of any condiment when put on a hot dog. I can hardly use mustard except in a recipe, outside of on a hot dog or hamburger. It can be the brown mustard or the bright yellowish-gold. So get that little line of mustard on the side of your dog and enjoy. I mean 'chomp' down!
A little ketsup, sour kraut, and other innovative things you may find on a hot dog bar are cool too. Don't be shy but please don't add too much and take the taste of that dog away...and don't forget the chips and soda! That's the way to do it!
My wife was born in Chicago and love her dogs just about like this...although she can do without the sport pepper. I'm a mustard and onion guy myself...like a little kraut too if it's available.
These are some of my favorites. Great job on this list.
