Sooner or later, much of what we bring into our homes is going to wind up in a landfill. With a few mindful choice however, you can create less trash at home, which means less waste all around.
Dry goods like rice, cereal and pasta can be purchased in bulk to reduce the amount of cardboard trash many families generate, and can save you money. Bulk dry goods can be stored in airtight reusable containers in the pantry - don't forget to label them!
Most households can reduce a significant amount of paper trash by using a shredder. Shred junk mail, statements and other paper trash to reduce what you need to throw away. Shredded paper makes great packing material, insulation filler material and can even be donated to your local animal shelter in some cases.
If you are still purchasing bottled water by the case, consider stainless steel or polycarbonate water bottles instead. Both types of personal water bottles are convenient, eco-friendly and can save you money.
You can reduce the amount of trash you create at home by hundreds of pounds each year simply unsubscribing from daily newspapers or monthly magazines. Choose online versions or perhaps start a reading co-op with neighbors instead.
Purchase only the items that you truly need now. It's a hard concept for some to embrace, but often what ends up in the trash are items that may have been on a clearance rack that never end up being used.
Reuse and recycle whenever possible.
