Pat Summitt is the winningest NCAA women's basketball coach of all-time. In fact, she is the only coach to ever win over 1,000 games. Summitt has also won the most career NCAA women's basketball titles as head coach with eight. After being named head coach in 1974, Summitt has spent her entire career as head coach of Tennessee. In 1998, Summitt won the NCAA women's basketball championship while also leading Tennessee to an undefeated 39-0 mark.
There is no debate as to who the two greatest NCAA women's basketball coaches in history are. After becoming head women's basketball coach at Connecticut in 1985, Geno Auriemma quickly established the program as one of the most dominant in all of NCAA sports. Not only has Auriemma coached Connecticut to seven NCAA women's basketball titles, but he has also led them to four undefeated seasons.
Although he does not have the total number of NCAA victories as most people on this list, Leon Barmore is the career leader among NCAA women's basketball coaches in winning percentage. Barmore's only head coaching job came at Louisiana Tech, where he coached from 1985-2002. In 1988, Barmore led Louisiana Tech to the NCAA women's basketball championship. Leon Barmore was named to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Entering the 2010-2011 NCAA women's basketball season, C. Vivian Stringer ranked third in career wins and was second among active coaches. Her career began as coach of Cheney State (1972-1983) and Iowa (1983-1995). Then Stringer became coach at Rutgers in 1995. Unfortunately, Stringer gained mainstream recognition after radio broadcaster Don Imus made racial, derogatory comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team.
After successful NCAA tenures as women's basketball coach at Idaho (1978-1980) and Ohio State (1980-1985), Tara VanDerveer became head coach at Stanford in 1985. VanDerveer quickly developed Stanford into an outstanding women's basketball program as she won the NCAA title in 1990 and 1992. In addition, VanDerveer served as head coach of Team USA at the 1996 Summer Olympics and won the Gold Medal.
