Beyond your basic snow shovel, some snow removal jobs require, or are made easier by, special snow removal devices.
But a list of snow removal tools must start with a shovel. A squared off or rectangular head is most common. These have more surface area than U-shaped heads and so move more snow per scoop. The heads are made of metal or plastic. Metal ones are better for scraping and chopping hard snow, but may have more problems with having wet snow stick to them. Plastic shovels are lighter and easier for many people to handle.
Find a shovel that has a handle in a comfortable length and weight for your use. If you use a metal shovel and snow sticks, spray a little cooking spray on the head before you start.
Snow blowers aren't needed if you just get a dusting of snow or up to a few inches at a time. Here in Tahoe where the snow falls by the feet, we must have a snow blower.
Snow blowers vary by the type of power, height of "hood", width of snow-clearing path, adjustability of the snow chute. There are other options like heated grips and headlights available as well.
If you don't quite need a snowblower, you could benefit from a snow thrower. These are convenient for areas with less snow, but too much to shovel. Short driveways, decks and sidewalks are ideal areas for these tools.
Snow throwers are generally powered by electricity. They also offer choices in height, width and adjustability of the chute. They are lighter and easy to handle. They may have a heavy rubber or plastic auger instead of the sharp metal blades of the snowblowers.
These handy items make getting lots of snow off of your car waaay easier than trying to use a traditional snow scraper. You can use it to push or pull the snow off of the car, speeding up the process quite a bit.
The Sno Brum has a long, adjustable handle. The snow removal surface is rectangular and made of soft but firm styrofoam. It works really well for removing deep snow from the car. The long handle is convenient for reaching the windshield or top surface of a truck or SUV.
A snow rake is similar to the snow broom, but can vary in design. The main purpose of these tools is to remove snow from roof surfaces. Leaving too much snow on the roof allows ice dams to form which can trap moisture, giving it nowhere to go but inside the walls of your house.
Use a snow rake to remove the snow from areas of the roof that can be reached. Corner areas seem to be especially vulnerable to snow dam formation.
