Traditionally, summer camp is an away-from-home experience. School age children are sent to a campground in the mountains, beside a lake or some other scenic area that is equipped with dormitories and dining halls. Children get to make new friends, develop social skills and participate in a wide variety of activities. Parents are encouraged to send their children to the same camp each summer.
Weekly summer theme camps are becoming quite popular. Parents can choose from education themes like math, science, reading, art, music, dance, crafts and other subject. Each week the theme changes and you can either enroll for several weeks or one at a time. There are usually no overnight accommodations at weekly theme camps.
Summer day camps are more economical than the traditional live-in alternative. These camps are usually 4 to 5 hours each day and last from the week school is out until just before it starts again. Children engage in a variety of activities at these camps during the day.
Parents can find any number of summer sports camps that fit their needs. Some are overnight camps and others are 4 to 5 hour day camps. Children are taught sportsmanlike conduct and skills in basketball, football, tennis, swimming, racquetball, soccer, baseball, martial arts--you name the sport and there's a camp somewhere for it.
Most churches offer Vacation Bible Schools (VBS), a favorite form of Christian summer camp. There are a variety of different topics from which to use. For the 2011 summer season, the following VBS camps are offered throughout the USA: Shake It Up Cafe, Island Odyssey, Big Apple, Kickin' It Old School, Mission to MARS, Beach Blast and Rev It Up to name a few. Parents can participate in one or as many as are offered throughout the summer. Check your local area for VBS offerings this summer.
