Introduction:

When a person has a stroke, it is important to get them medical help within three hours. Blood clots can quickly be dissolved by drugs and steps can be taken to prevent further brain damage. There are some stroke warning signs that should never be ignored.

Weakness or Numbness

A person having a stroke may feel weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the body. The mouth may droop on one side when the stroke victim tries to smile. When the person is asked to raise both arms, the weak arm will not stay up. It may be difficult to control hand, finger and arm movements.

Unintelligible Speech and Confusion

It is common for a stroke victim to have slurred speech and to be confused. The person may not be able to comprehend what is being said or to follow instructions. When asked to repeat back a sentence, they may have difficulty finding the correct words or to be understood.

Vision Problems

Another one of the stroke warning signs is vision problems that come on suddenly. The vision problems can happen in one or both eyes. There may be complaints of blurry or double vision. There may be some difficulty in looking to the left or right. The person may also complain of being dizzy.

Loss of Balance

A stroke victim may suffer from a loss of balance and have trouble walking. They may have severe coordination problems and stumble or fall. Sometimes, the person can seem to be intoxicated. It is important not to assume that the person is drunk. Check for other stroke warning signs and rush the person to an emergency room if they have any.

Severe Headache

The last of the stroke warning signs is a bad headache. People have headaches all of the time, but this is a headache that is severe and intense. It comes on suddenly and is unlike any other headache.
Not all of these five warning signs happen when there is a stroke, but none of them should be ignored.
