Dust Mites are tiny micro-organisms that live in bedding and feed off dead skin cells and in dust. As disgusting as this sounds every home has them. Fortunately, they are tiny and you can only see them through a microscope and they don't carry disease. But they do cause upper respiratory problems and allergies. So caring for you bedding and keeping your bedroom clean is of utmost important.
Buy a mattress cover that specifically says that it protects against dust mites. Leaving your mattress unprotected can result in millions of these organisms finding a home in your mattress.
Make sure you vacuum your mattress each time you remove the protective mattress cover for laundering. Launder the mattress cover according to the label directions.
Buy protective pillow covers. These covers zip over your pillow and will protect it for up to a year. They extend the life of your pillow as well as keep those nasty little dust mites from residing in your pillow.
Wash your sheets and pillow cases at least every 2 weeks (every week if possible)in the hottest water possible. It's also important to wash your pillows.
Make sure to vacuum and dust your bedroom thoroughly every week. This will control the dust mites and help alleviate those upper respiratory problems and allergies that dust mites can cause.
Dust Mites love humidity and warm places so if your bedroom is on the humid side you might need to consider using an air purifier or a dehumidifier. You don't want to give dust mites a reason to thrive.
