Often linked to energy-rich high-calorie foods, when someone tastes a sweet food they feel more nourished and content. Sweet foods are linked to "comfort foods" because of that nourishing feeling.
Often a love or hate taste because it can be linked with a danger sign, signaling unripe or "off" food. Most people only like sour with sweet like in sour fruits or candies.
Salty foods often aren't linked by danger signals and therefore are enjoyed by most everybody (sometimes to much). Salt can be a reminder of fun times because restaurants and out-to-go places have oversalted food, and because taste is such a strong memory holder, tasting salt will remind people of those fun times.
Bitter can be a danger signal because most natural toxins (flowers, mushrooms etc.) have bitter tastes. Bitter in the wild is best to be avoided!
Unami is japanese for "delicious" and pertains to the savory side of food. It is tasted in the foods that are described as pleasantly "brothy" or "meaty" with a long lasting, mouthwatering and coating sensation over the tongue.
