One of the things we often take for granted is the gift of eye-sight. We seem to pay more attention to losing weight and watching our blood pressure levels (not that these are unimportant) than we do to taking care of our eyes.
Sunglasses aren't just there for aesthetics. Most modern sunglasses have lenses that offer excellent protection from the harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays from the sun. Constant exposure to UV rays may lead to complications such as glaucoma.
Lutein is a pigment found in some fruits and vegetables (particularly leafy greens) that has been shown to reverse the effects of macular degeneration (deterioration of retina that causes loss of detail vision). So eat plenty of kale and spinach. Interestingly, carrots don't contain very high levels of lutein but they are rich in Vitamin A, which is also important for ocular health.
Smoking increases the risks of developing cataracts, macular degeneration and optic nerve damage. The less you smoke, the lower your chances of damaging your eyes.
Dryness in the eyes causes irritation, which often lead people to rub their eyes. Overly vigorous rubbing of eyes can cause small abrasions to the eyeball, which may lead to other complications. So be wary of air-conditioning or exposure to smoke which may cause dryness in your eyes.
Much like we have medical checkups with our physicians, we should have eye exams too. The older we get, the more often these exams ought to be. Serious eye problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration can be treated if detected early.
Just like any other part of the body, our eyes need looking after too (pun absolutely intended).
Great tips and a good reminder for all of us!
