The Newbury House was built in the 1800's as the first boarding house in Rugby. The house is furnished with beautiful antiques. Stepping through the front door is like stepping back in time.
The only restaurant in Rugby, the Harrow Road Cafe goes over and above to make sure you do not leave Rugby hungry. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with different specials daily. The waitresses were very friendly and food delicious.
The visitors center offers a tour of the town. The tour starts with a documentary in the small theatre on site. With a little history about the town under your belt, you are then taken through some of the original buildings in the town.
Your tour includes the church, library and schoolhouse.
The 1/2 mile hike down to the Gentlemans Swimming Hole is a fairly easy hike and well worth the effort. The views are amazing and you can almost see the workers from 1800 Rugby, cooling off in the waters after a long day of working on the development of the village.
Be sure and visit the town cemetery where you will find the graves of the original Rugby settlers. The victims of the 1881 typhoid fever epidemic are laid to rest here, along with the towns "First Lady" Margaret Hughes, mother of the towns founder.
