Drive down any street in the US and chances are you will find a mutt. In spite of their lack of pedigree, these dogs are some of the best-behaved and most loving dogs in existence. Consider one the next time you adopt an animal.
You can't beat mutts if you want a good dog. Pure breeds have excellent traits too, but some have genetic issues, such as hip dysplasia, due to poor breeding practices. Avoid genetically-transmitted behavior and health problems by choosing a mutt.
Taking in a stray mutt and giving it a home is a good way to teach your children kindness, compassion and responsibility. Make sure your kids are old enough to help in the dog's care.
Adopting a mutt keeps one less animal out of a shelter. This saves you and your neighbors tax dollars. In addition, you'll be saving a shelter worker the grief of putting yet another dog down.
Shelters require that any animal adopted from them be spayed or neutered. The fees you pay to adopt your mutt will usually include the cost of this procedure. Spaying and neutering cuts the excess animal population and opens up more homes for mutts.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, an animal is put down about every 8 seconds in this country. Adopting a mutt saves his or her life.
Always be a responsible pet owner. Think long and hard before adopting any animal. These creatures depend on us for love and protection -- make certain you are up to the task.

Great article, And H5! You may want to reconsider the HSUS link ... they hide the info well, but the Humane Society of the United States is a HORRIBLE organization, on a level with PETA ... they want you to think they're wonderful, but they support no local shelters and have no shelter. They're a big money lobbying group trying to take dog owner's rights away from them ... I wrote an article if you're interested about it on HubPages some time ago: http://hubpages.com/hub/Animal-Welfare-vs-Animal-Rights
