Many wives tales promote medical myths that modern science has debunked. Here are five common medical myths.
This myth originated with a military study that showed soldiers lost the most body heat through their head. What is often overlooked from this study is that the soldiers were fully clothes except for their head. Completely naked, the human body loses 10% of its heat through the head and 90% through the rest of the body.
Moral of the story - if it is cold outside, cover up!
Countless double blind studies have proven that children, even those with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), did not display any difference in behavior between the children that had been given sugar and those that did not.
Interestingly, parents who were told their children had been given sugar, even when they had not, reported that their children behaved hyper. It seems that this medical myth is all in people's minds.
Truth be told, cracking your knuckles will only cause your finger joints to weaken. Arthritis is cause by many things including genetics, weight, age, and previous injury, but not by cracking your knuckles.
This is as much as a myth as swallowing watermelon seeds will cause a watermelon to grow in your stomach. Yes, gum is indigestible by the human body, but it passes through just like anything else and it doesn't stick to your insides.
Coffee dehydrates your body just like alcohol. The truth is coffee will only make you an alert drunk and your hang over worse. To sober up, you have to wait until the alcohol passes through your system. Drinking water will help a hangover though.
What other medical myths can you share?
I learned from your great h5 list.
Thanks for clearing this up. I still believed a few of these myths.
I already knew 2-5, but I wasn't sure about 1.
I love all of these; especially like seeing the sugar myth exposed.
